Hello, My name is Eric and I'am from the Netherlands. I have a Raleigh Chopper MK1 since last week. The bike needs some parts being replaced by original ones, among them the seat, pedals, handlebar, grips. Other things need to be removed or is already removed, such like front & rear lights, black & red plastic on sissy bar, etc. What I've noticed on my bike is that it doesn't have a spoke protection disc on the rear wheel, and it seems it never had one. When I look on the English Wikipedia page, there is a photo of an early Raleigh Chopper which missing a spoke protection disc too. (see this photo) My question to you: Is it normal for MK1 bikes to be made without such a disc? Does very early MK1 bikes missing such disc? A photo from my bike:

Hello and welcome, your bike has a number of wrong parts. I would assume whoever restored it left it off. It’s a crossover model, so late mk1 therefor it would of had a spoke protector/ pie plate.

Hi Eric, welcome. As stated by Chris it does need a protector disc. The grips and break levers are also incorrect. Notice also that it is a Mk2 rear mud guard, that is why there are two holes. But that only matters if you want to get it nearer to original. Your bike - your rules . What is the serial number on the frame? It is located near the slot for the rear wheel at the bottom of the stay.

Hello,
My bike has more strange items than original items. I have disassemble the bike, and will start repaint the frame in the GoldenYellow color it originally has. Now it has a mixture of vanilla yellow and lemon yellow.
The frame number is: 166 758
It seems that the rear wheel never had a spoke protector disc, or it has a very long time ago. The wheel is still in a good condition, and below the sprocket it seems it has a thick washer. I'm not sure a protector disc will fit in the wheel at all.

I can't access your facebook photograph of your bike, but the photograph above is a very rare cable through tall frame 5 speed model...you can see the rear brake caliper is reversed, compared to a later Mk1 bikes....maybe made in 1968..these did not have a spoke protector disc...but the later tall frame and Mk1 did..... This is my unrestored bike, bought from the US, many years ago. See no disc. www.rcoc.co.uk/jims%20old%20one.htm

The frame number is: 166 758 Well I referred to the date list on this website and it stated serial numbers starting with (first two digits):- 13 - Early 1972 14 - Mid 1972 15 - Late 1972 with some Mk2's starting with these digits. Starting 16 will need one of the experts who come on here to help with that. Glad you are restoring. I recently had a Mk1 that had been sprayed a red colour resprayed to its original golden yellow colour. Good luck!

Thanks!
My bike doesn't have the cables in the frame. and the chain guard is from later versions. I think now my bike has been restored with parts from other bikes and with parts that doesn't belong to a Raleigh Chopper. The rear wheel could be from an early model, but the frame from a latter one. One strange thing about the frame I've noticed is the left tube (where sissybar could be placed in) has a perfect drilled small hole 1/4 inch from the top. I will check the serial number again tomorrow. I've started removing the paint for repainting.
